The Russian Aerospace Forces have received the first series of modernised MiG-31BMs from the Sokol factory in Nizhny Novgorod. These aircraft, equipped with modern R-37 and R-77 air-to-air missiles and the Zaslon-M radar, offer enhanced combat capabilities. The MiG-31BMs can reach an altitude of 20,600 metres and a speed of Mach 2.83 (around 3,000 km/h). They were tested on the ground and in the air before being deployed to their permanent base. The aim of the upgrade is to keep these interceptors in service until they are replaced by a new model.
Reception of modernised MiG-31BMs
The Russian Aerospace Forces recently took delivery of the first series of modernised MiG-31BMs, marking an important milestone in the upgrading of their air defence capabilities. The aircraft, supplied by the Sokol factory in Nizhny Novgorod, have undergone major repairs and significant upgrades. Technical characteristics of the MiG-31BM
The modernised MiG-31BM boasts impressive technical features. It can reach a maximum flight altitude of 20,600 metres and a speed of Mach 2.83, or around 3,000 km/h. This performance is made possible by two D-30F-6 turbofan engines with afterburner, which offer high traction and robust operational capabilities.
The aircraft is 22.69 metres long and 6.15 metres high, with a wingspan of 13.46 metres. These dimensions, combined with its powerful engine, enable the MiG-31BM to cover vast distances and respond rapidly to long-range air threats. The MiG-31BM is equipped with R-33, R-37 and R-77 missiles, which provide flexibility in air engagements, enabling it to effectively neutralise enemy targets.
Advantages and disadvantages of the MiG-31BM
One of the main advantages of the MiG-31BM is its ability to intercept targets at long range, thanks to its advanced weapons and Zaslon-M radar. The ability to fly at very high altitudes and supersonic speeds makes them particularly effective for air defence against fast-moving and stealthy threats. What’s more, modernising these aircraft will extend their service life without the need to produce new aircraft, which represents a major saving for Russia.
However, the MiG-31BM also has its drawbacks. Their operating costs are high, and maintenance of the engines and advanced systems can be complex and costly. What’s more, although modernisation has improved their performance, they are still based on a Soviet-era design, which could make them less competitive against new-generation interceptors developed by other military powers.
